Progressive Black Lives Matter Activist Cori Bush Scores House Victory in Missouri
Welcome Cori Bush to 鈥淭he Squad.鈥
Bush 鈥 a pastor, nurse and Black Lives Matter activist 鈥 is the latest progressive to upend the political career of a well-established moderate Democrat. She became Missouri鈥檚 first Black congresswoman Tuesday, winning in the 1st Congressional District, the state鈥檚 most Democratic-leaning region, according to the Associated Press.
鈥淭his is definitely a night to remember,鈥 Bush said during , after capturing an overwhelming 84 percent of the vote. 鈥淭his has been a historic day from the beginning to the end.鈥
Bush was expected to join the likes of New York鈥檚 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota鈥檚 Ilhan Omar after securing a primary defeat this summer against two-decade incumbent William Lacy Clay, whose family has held the congressional seat since the tail end of the Civil Rights Movement in 1969. Education wasn鈥檛 the cornerstone of her campaign, but she鈥檚 tied one of her key issues 鈥 criminal justice reform 鈥 to classrooms by vowing to 鈥渆nd the school-to-prison pipeline.鈥
Protests in Ferguson, Missouri after a police officer killed Michael Brown in 2015 have been credited for motivating Bush鈥檚 political career. After George Floyd was killed at the hands of a Minneapolis officer in May, she promised to 鈥渄efund the police and refund our social services.鈥
鈥淒on鈥檛 like this idea? Well, we don鈥檛 like dead Black & Brown bodies & broken families at the hands of those sworn to protect us,鈥 Bush tweeted. 鈥淭he police have failed at fixing themselves鈥攕o we’re going to do it.鈥
However, she hasn鈥檛 offered public comments on the recent wave of protests demanding police-free schools, a movement that gained steam after the Minneapolis school district terminated its contract with the city鈥檚 police department. Her campaign didn鈥檛 respond to requests for comment on the issue.
Instead, her campaign website proposes ending the 鈥渟chool-to-prison pipeline鈥 by 鈥渋ncreasing teacher pay and adjusting the student to teacher ratio so that our children get the proper attention and learning they deserve.鈥
Other education priorities include a goal to 鈥渆liminate all $2.6 trillion in college debt,鈥 expand Pell Grant eligibility to students who are undocumented or incarcerated and incentivize high school certificate programs to 鈥渢rain a new generation of skilled workers without college degrees.鈥
