“When you get out of your car and walk into the school building, you’ve just gone from the most dangerous place you’ll be all day to the safest place,” Langman, an expert on the psychology of school shooters, said during a recent National Association of School Resource Officers conference.

This year, however, it was the threat of school shootings, not their statistical rarity, that rose to the top of Americans’ minds. People, Langman said, are far more likely to die in a traffic accident than a school shooting. According to an analysis of such incidents by Ӱ, at least 50 people were killed and 88 injured in firearm incidents at K-12 schools and colleges in 2018.

Just a few weeks into 2018, the conversation about gun violence in America’s schools poignantly re-emerged when a gunman walked into a rural Kentucky high school and opened fire, killing two people and injuring 18 others. Still, the worst was yet to come. Just weeks later, a gunman killed 17 people at a school in Parkland, Florida — one of the deadliest school shootings in American history. Then in May, 10 people were shot dead at a school in Santa Fe, Texas.

The response was unprecedented. Thousands of students across the country marched out of their classrooms to demand action from lawmakers. Student survivors from Parkland became household names in their advocacy for stricter firearm rules.

“Part of us died that day,” Ilan Alhadeff, the father of one Parkland shooting victim, . “My daughter was shot that day in the heart, the spine, in the femur and artery. If she lived, she would have been paralyzed for life. No parent should have to deal with this again. No family.”

Lawmakers passed a bevy of new laws mandating a range of responses — from hiring more school-based police to “red flag” laws that temporarily strip firearms from people who present a danger to themselves or others.

School districts across the country opened their wallets, spending education resources on surveillance cameras and other tech-driven security. In , a state panel investigating the Parkland shooting found several ways in which school and police officials failed to avert the tragedy. Sheriff’s deputies didn’t rush into the school to stop the gunman, according to the report, and school staff left doors unlocked and did not call a “code red” alarm quickly enough.

School safety even worked its way into the 2018 midterm elections and may have affected the outcome of several races.

Throughout 2018, Ӱ tracked firearm incidents on K-12 school and college campuses that resulted in injury or death. More than half of the injuries and deaths can be attributed to just three incidents: The shootings in Marshall County, Kentucky; Parkland; and Santa Fe. The shootings in Parkland and Santa Fe were the only ones to result in more than two fatalities.

While heated debate persists over the precise definition of a “school shooting,” we found the firearm incidents varied significantly. For example, five students and one school resource officer died as the result of suicide. Other incidents occurred during afterschool sports events: One person was killed and six were injured in shootings that unfolded during three separate football games, and another was injured during a track meet.

Seven of the incidents unfolded in school parking lots. Several were reportedly accidental, while others stemmed from fights that escalated. Though a majority of incidents took place at high schools, some involved younger children. Current or former students were identified as perpetrators in about half of the incidents.

This map includes school shootings that took place on campus where a person was injured or killed. Incidents resulting in injury are labeled blue, while incidents resulting in death are labeled red. Taken as a whole, the data underscores a disconnect between the heated political debates surrounding school shootings and the threat they pose to children in classrooms. School shootings are extremely rare — and the type of mass shootings that drive policy are rarer still.

But fear can cloud objective decision-making, argues David Ropeik, a former Harvard University professor and a consultant on risk perception. In his own analysis, he puts the odds that a K-12 student will be shot and killed at a public school at . Over the past two decades, fewer than 3 percent of youth homicides and fewer than 1 percent of youth suicides occurred at school, according to a recent .

But when a large number of people die in a single event, Ropeik said, the tragedy feels uniquely threatening. Parents are particularly afraid of threats to their children, especially when managing such risks is largely out of their control. Those concerns, he said, are magnified by the intensely polarized debate over American gun policy.

“We’re not talking about kids being shot to death by bows and arrows,” Ropeik said. “It is undoubtedly easier to kill people with a gun than anything else — a lot of people all at once, especially. So there is a unique aspect to the shooting part of the issue [that] society has to come to grips with, and that’s tied up in our partisan, tribal polarities.”

The partisanship has only magnified since the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which left 26 children and educators dead, argues Kenneth Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services. In recent years, both gun rights and gun control groups “have hijacked school safety to advance their political agendas.” That partisanship, he said, means that “knee-jerk legislation” has often taken precedence over comprehensive policies to address school safety.

Trump said the Florida legislature’s reaction to the Parkland school shooting was a “textbook example” of what to avoid after a school shooting. That law required all schools to hire armed police or security staff, a requirement districts . It also required districts to conduct school security assessments that Trump said were a “hodgepodge patchwork” of physical security checklists that didn’t focus on finer aspects of school safety like emergency planning.

But not everyone agrees. Mark Barden said he has seen remarkable progress in school safety since his son was killed at Sandy Hook. Barden is a co-founder and the managing director of Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit that teaches students and adults how to recognize the warning signs of gun violence. He cited  among Americans for stricter gun laws.

Trump said the rush to implement stricter policies after mass shootings could be problematic, but Barden said recent tragedies have galvanized people to take action. While gun control activists faced several high-profile electoral defeats in November, including in Florida’s close gubernatorial race, one gun control PAC who went on to win their seats in the House of Representatives.

“We just saw a whole bunch of policymakers win their seats because they campaigned primarily on strong gun violence prevention policy,” he said. “I have always known that we had the numbers, but I just think folks were not engaged, and so we’re seeing that engagement now begin to build.”

Barden is among a growing list of parents and students who’ve become advocates for measures like gun control or stricter school security measures after experiencing tragedy firsthand. That emotional appeal can be effective in encouraging people to join political causes, said Nadine Connell, an associate professor of criminology and director of the Center for Crime and Justice Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. But that pain, she warned, can lead to shortsighted public policy.

“We can’t create policy based on somebody’s pain,” she said. “That’s understandably difficult for people to wrap their heads around because the pain is so great.”

Connell is currently building a database of all school shootings in the U.S. dating back to 1990, which she hopes will help law enforcement and school leaders better understand the causes of school violence and how to prevent it. Although she is still finalizing that report, she said the number of school shootings has remained relatively consistent in the past few decades even as the number of children in America’s K-12 schools has grown.

She said schools still don’t know how best to prevent school shootings because researchers don’t yet fully understand the underlying motives of school shooters, who are not a homogeneous group. But if officials address other social problems facing children, shootings could also be averted, she said.

“If our real concern is the safety and well-being of young people, school shootings need to be very low on the list of things that we worry about,” Connell said. “Suicides need to be up there, child neglect and child abuse needs to be up there, and so when you think about it from a social perspective, are we investing in the right things?”

Some policies passed to thwart school shootings have unintended consequences, she said. For example, she said an increase in school-based police could increase student contact with law enforcement “so now we’re getting more minority young people involved in the criminal justice system, which is an extremely negative outcome on so many levels.”

Langman, the expert on the psychology of school shooters, believes education and law enforcement officials have the potential to stop gunmen. He spent the bulk of his speech at the school resource officers’ conference reading the harrowing, and often profane, journal entries and classroom assignments from soon-to-be killers. If officials are vigilant, he said, they can identify students at risk of becoming violent and possibly avert the next school shooting.

But the large-scale concern over school shootings this year also comes with broader implications for student mental health. He said the issue came up at his private practice in Pennsylvania after the shooting in Parkland. After the tragedy, one of his patients, a teenage girl, was living in fear that she’d be shot dead in her classroom. But the girl was more likely to die from being struck by lightning, Langman said.

“If we’re not going through our day worrying about that lighting bolt,” he said, “you don’t have to worry moment by moment of being gunned down at school.”

Guns at School: After 41 Deaths & 74 Injuries in 2018, What We’ve Learned From Tracking Six Months of School Shootings /guns-at-school-after-41-deaths-74-injuries-in-2018-what-weve-learned-from-tracking-six-months-of-school-shootings/ Mon, 25 Jun 2018 20:20:15 +0000 /?p=526226 Ӱ is tracking gun-related injuries and deaths at schools throughout 2018.for the latest reports, and see below for an interactive map of incidents involving the discharging of a firearm that causes a wound or fatality on school property.

It was less than one month into 2018 when a spate of firearm incidents in schools — including a January shooting in Kentucky that killed two people and injured 18 others — prompted news stories highlighting the prevalence of gun violence on American campuses. Since then, mass school shootings in Florida and Texas have revived a heated debate about gun laws and strategies to keep students safe.

In order to help contextualize the prevalence of gun violence in schools, Ӱ built a map to track firearm incidents at K-12 schools and universities that result in injury or death. Six months into 2018, the map offers a window into the prevalence of firearm incidents in education institutions, which have resulted in at least 41 deaths and 74 injuries. Beyond mass shootings, that tally includes a shooting after a fight broke out at a university party, a teacher who accidentally fired a gun during a public safety class, and four student suicides.

But across incidents of varying scale and motive, they share several similarities. In all fatal incidents, the identified suspect is male. That includes suspects in mass school shootings, a with mass shooters outside an educational setting.

And in 9 of 13 campus firearm incidents resulting in a fatality at this point in 2018, the suspected shooter was identified as a student at the institution where the violence unfolded. Often, gunmen who aren’t students have close connections to the campuses. In Parkland, Florida, the suspected shooter had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School before attacking the campus. After a Winston-Salem State University football player was killed after a shooting that reportedly unfolded during a party on the Wake Forest University campus, the suspect as a former Winston-Salem State University student.

This map includes school shootings that took place on campus where a person was injured or killed. Incidents resulting in injury are labeled blue, while incidents resulting in death are labeled red. Nadine Connell, an associate professor of criminology and director of the Center for Crime and Justice Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas, said the fact that students often carry out campus shootings isn’t surprising.

“Schools are not very often attacked by strangers, just like very few places are attacked by strangers,” she said in an email. “The same could be said for domestic violence — people don’t attack strangers’ families — they attack their own.”

Recognizing a shooting suspect’s relationship to a school is important context, said Connell, who is currently building a database of all school shootings in the U.S. since 1990. That database, she hopes, will help law enforcement and school leaders better understand the causes of school violence and how to prevent future attacks.

While news reports highlight the threat of an outsider barging into a school to commit violence, she noted that such scenarios are less common. The suspect in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, is a clear exception. Although he previously attended the school, he wasn’t supposed to be there.

“The rhetoric seems to be, ‘Someone can burst into our schools at any time and gun everyone down,’ ” Connell said. “It’s not the right rhetoric, because it makes as much sense as someone storming into your house — the risk is so incredibly low.”

The incident in Parkland, which, is likely to perpetuate the notion that outsiders represent a disproportionate threat, she said. In with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, a retired Secret Service agent said he warned administrators — two months before the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — about vulnerability to an outside threat.

Despite concern around the prevalence of on-campus shootings, Connell was quick to point out that they’re statistically infrequent. “School is still the safest place for children,” she said. During the 2014-15 school year, the U.S. experienced 1,168 homicides of youth aged 5 to 18, of which 20 occurred at school, according to a recent on school crime and safety. Over the past two decades, the report noted, fewer than 3 percent of youth homicides, and fewer than 1 percent of youth suicides, occurred at school.

The Education Department’s most recent Civil Rights Data Collection, which the departmentreleased in April and presents information from the 2015-16 school year, required for the first time that schools report details about “violent and serious crimes.” That year, schools reported nearly 1.1 million incidents of serious offenses, 94 percent of which were physical attacks or fights, or threats of physical attacks, without a weapon. Meanwhile, 235 schools reported a shooting on campus, including incidents where nobody was hurt. That’s about one-fifth of 1 percent of schools.

Among public K-12 schools that have experienced gunfire resulting in injury or death this year, one campus — Lincoln High School in Philadelphia — reported a firearm-related incident in the 2015-16 school year.

Mass school shootings — which are typically at the forefront of heated policy debates — are even rarer. Two incidents — at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida and Santa Fe High School in Texas — accounted for more than half of firearm deaths on campuses in 2018. No other incident in 2018 has resulted in three or more fatalities, though the January shooting at Marshall County High School in Kentucky of two people and injured 18 others.

If not for the bravery of science teacher Jason Seaman, authorities say the school shooting at a middle school in Noblesville, Indiana, could have been much more grave.

On Friday morning, a male student walked into Seaman’s classroom at Noblesville West Middle School near Indianapolis and opened fire. Springing to action, Seaman, a former college football player, tackled the shooter to the ground and halted the gunfire. Before subduing the suspect, Seaman was shot three times. Also injured in the shooting was 13-year-old student Ella Whistler, who was transported to a hospital in Indianapolis and remained in “critical yet stable” condition Tuesday, the girl’s family .

Noblesville a student asked to leave the classroom and “returned armed with two handguns” before opening fire. Police say they received reports of the shooting just after 9 a.m., on Friday, and an officer stationed at the school responded quickly to detain the gunman. Authorities have not identified the suspected shooter.

“My actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could have done given the circumstances,” 29-year-old Seaman, a seventh-grade science teacher, said during on Monday. “I deeply care for my students and their well-being. That is why I did what I did.”

Seaman is among several educators, school resource officers, and students who’ve taken bold actions in recent months to thwart shootings at schools. Here are several recent school shootings that could’ve been much worse without swift action from campus heroes:

Santa Fe, Texas

On May 18, a 17-year-old student opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Texas, fatally shooting 10 people and leaving another 13 injured. But John Barnes, a school resource officer who responded quickly to the incident, has been . Barnes and another officer quickly responded to reports of the attack and contained the shooter in a classroom, drawing his attention and gunfire away from other students. After being shot in the arm by a shotgun, which left him in critical condition, Barnes instructed the other officer to leave him behind to ensure students’ safety.

“Officer Barnes is a hero,” Sheriff Henry Trochesset said. “The two officers that engaged that individual within four minutes, or approximately four minutes — they’re heroes. They contained him in that one area, isolated to them and engaging with them, so he did no more damage to other classes.”

Dixon, Illinois

School resource officer Mark Dallas was after thwarting a school shooting in Illinois this month before the suspected gunman was able to injure any students.

Matthew Milby, a 19-year-old former student, is suspected of opening fire at Dixon High School near a school auditorium as students gathered to rehearse their graduation ceremony. After spotting the armed suspect at the school, Dallas reportedly confronted the former student, prompting a shoot-out between the officer and the suspect. Dallas shot Milby and took him into custody. Nobody else was injured in the shooting.

“I could not be more proud of the police officer and the way he responded to the situation. With shots ringing out through the hallways of the school, he charged towards the suspect and confronted him, head on,” Police Chief Steven Howell . “Because of his heroic actions, countless lives were saved. We are forever indebted to him for his service and his bravery.”

Parkland, Florida

Seventeen people were killed in the February 14 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Though it was among the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history, actions by several students and educators for saving countless lives.

Among them is 15-year-old student Anthony Borges, who was shot five times as he used his body as a human shield to protect his classmates from gunfire.

Although Borges lived to tell his story, assistant football coach and security guard Aaron Feis did not. The 37-year-old used his body to shield students from gunfire, an act that cost him his life.

A school shooting in northern Illinois last week ended without harm to students or staff when a school resource officer shot and injured the gunman.

Seniors at Dixon High School were having a graduation rehearsal on May 16 when the suspect, identified as Matthew Milby, 19, of Dixon, opened fire shortly after 8 a.m. Mark Dallas, the school’s resource officer for five years, promptly confronted Milby and chased him out of the school and down a nearby street, according to .

Milby — identified by most media outlets as a former student— shot a few rounds at the officer but missed, law enforcement reports stated. Dallas then shot back, hitting Milby. After being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the suspect was taken to Lee County Jail the next day and charged with three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, with bond set at $2 million, the Times reported. Police said the weapon, a 9-millimeter semiautomatic rifle, belonged to Milby’s mother.

Authorities and politicians alike have praised Dallas for his bravery, hailing him as a “hero.” He was placed on administrative leave afterward, in accordance with policy.

“I could not be more proud of the police officer and the way he responded in this situation,” Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell told reporters. “Because of his heroic actions, countless lives were saved. We are forever indebted to him for his service and his bravery.”

Politicians such as Illinois governor Bruce Rauner also took to social media to express their gratitude.

7 Updates on Santa Fe High School Rampage: Here’s What We Know So Far About Mass Shooting That Left 10 Dead /7-updates-on-santa-fe-high-school-rampage-heres-what-we-know-so-far-about-mass-shooting-that-left-10-dead/ Fri, 18 May 2018 21:47:26 +0000 /?p=524436 Updated May 20:

were killed in Friday’s massacre. At least 13 people were injured, including 2 law enforcement officers.

The suspect, 17-year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, an honor-roll student and former football player, reportedly confessed to the rampage and told authorities that he spared students he liked so that “he could have his story told.” The family of Shana Fisher, a 16-year old student who was among those killed Friday, toldthat they believe their daughter was targeted because she repeatedly rejected the gunman’s attempts to date her.

The gunman,,about a half hour after entering an art classroom armed witha .38 caliber and Remington shotgun, said Galveston County Judge Mark Henry. While Pagourtzis faces charges of capital murder and aggravated assault on a peace officer, he cannot face the death penalty.

Nine students and one teacher were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire at about 7:45 a.m. in a first-period art class at Santa Fe High School near Galveston, Texas. At least 10 people sustained injuries, according to — including two officers.

Here’s what we know so far:

1 Suspect is in custody, but motive is not yet known.

Media outlets such as Friday afternoon that the suspect in Friday’s shooting is 17-year-old student Dimitrios Pagourtzis. Pagourtzis reportedly had at least three firearms on him: a shotgun, an assault-style rifle, and a pistol. The shotgun and revolver were legally owned by the suspect’s father, said in an afternoon press conference.

Fellow student Dustin Severin, 17, told that he’d seen the suspectin a trench coat shortly before the attack. Pagourtzis’s social media posts — on Friday — show the teen recently wearing a T-shirt with the words “Born to Kill,” along with photos of guns and a jacket with Nazi regalia. His Facebook page has since been deleted.

2 There is a possible accomplice.

While Pagourtzis is the primary suspect currently, authorities this morning also detained a second “person of interest” — an 18-year-old male — who they believe might have acted as an accomplice. No name has been released.

3Little is known (yet) about the identities of the victims.

Nine students and one teacher were reportedly killed, but no names were officially released as of Friday afternoon.

Some information was provided about the injured, however. A Santa Fe Independent School District (ISD)resource officer, John Barnes, was reportedly shot in the upper arm and is undergoing surgery, according to . And David Marshall, the chief nursing officer at the University of Texas Medical Branch, said in a press conference that two adults and one minor were receiving treatment at that facility. The minor is a 16-year-old male in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

4 Police found explosives at the school.

While combing the area in and around the school after the shooting, officials found explosive devices such as pressure cookers and pipe bombs, reports stated.

“There have been explosive devices found in the high school and surrounding areas adjacent to the high school,” Santa Fe ISD said in a tweet. “Because of the threat of explosive items, community members should be on the look-out for suspicious packages and anything that looks out of place.”

Friday afternoon, police were searching Pagourtzis’s home —reportedly less than three miles from the school —for more explosives, .

5 Nearly 3 months ago, officials placed the school on lockdown after reports of gunshots.

Shortly after shots began ringing out on Friday, students barricaded the classroom doors and hid — just as they’d done nearly three months ago.

On February 28, the school was on lockdown for two hours after police received reports of what sounded like gunshots outside the school. The when investigators failed to pinpoint an imminent threat.

6 There are “thoughts and prayers” — and some pushback.

As the country reels from this latest tragedy, many officials, including President Donald Trump, began offering condolences and prayers:

But many politicians — including Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings and — are denouncing the “thoughts and prayers” approach.

No one seemed more frustrated Friday than students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, who lost 17 students and teachers in a February mass shooting. It was the last day of class for Stoneman Douglas seniors as they watched events unfold in Texas.

“Get ready for two weeks of media coverage of politicians acting like they give a shit,” senior and gun reform advocate David Hogg tweeted.

https://twitter.com/Emma4Change/status/997505205771079680

7 The shooting occurred just a day after Education Secretary Betsy DeVos held a “closed” meeting with survivors of previous mass shootings.

The education secretary met Thursday with survivors of the Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and Parkland shootings, along with their family members. The closed meeting hoped to “give us a clear-eyed look at what has gone wrong in the past, the lessons learned and areas where we continue to fall short as we work to keep our nation’s students and teachers safe at school,” DeVos said in a written statement.

After Friday’s shooting, she tweeted, “We simply cannot allow this trend to continue.”

Updated May 20:

Friday’s shooting took the lives of — 8 students and two teachers. At least 13 people were injured, including 2 law enforcement officers.

Police identified the suspect as 17-year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, an honor-roll student and former football player. They released no motive for the attack, but said Pagourtzis confessed to the rampage and spared students he liked so that “he could have his story told.” The family of Shana Fisher, a 16-year old student who was among those killed Friday, told that they believe their daughter was targeted because she repeatedly rejected the gunman’s attempts to date her.

At least eight people were killed Friday morning after a gunman opened fire at a high school near Galveston, Texas, according to local law enforcement. Early reports noted an unconfirmed number of additional people injured, including a school resource officer.

Students were just starting their day at Santa Fe High School when gunfire erupted at about 7:45 a.m. in an art classroom, according to witness reports. The school went on lockdown at about 8 a.m., and the alleged shooter was arrested and taken into custody after Santa Fe Police and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The casualties were mostly students, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told the press on Friday. The high school has roughly 1,500 students, according to .

Although the alleged shooter’s identity is unknown, Mark Henry, a Galveston County judge, told that the shooter is believed to be a student. He added that authorities have detained a second person of interest.

Gonzalez confirmed on Twitter Friday morning that the situation had been contained.

In the aftermath of the shooting, at least 12 people were transported to local hospitals: Seven people are at Clear Lake Regional Medical in Webster, Texas; two are at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City; and three patients are at John Sealy University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, according to .

Friday’s shooting is the deadliest shooting on school grounds since the massacre in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 that left 17 people dead. It is also the third school shooting in the past eight days, following an on Wednesday and one in Palmdale, California, on May 11. Neither resulted in fatalities.

Prior to Friday’s attack, there had been at least 31 fatalities and 57 injuries from school shootings reported in 2018.

President Donald Trump gave a video statement this morning denouncing the shooting and asking “all levels of government” to “do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others.”

Politicians in the education realm also expressed condolences. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos released a written statement on Twitter that offered “prayers” and assured that the Federal Commission on School Safety is “working to identify proven ways to prevent violence and keep our students safe.”
